Deepwater Line Is The Best Positional Audio We Have Heard This Year

Sound underwater should be directionally uncertain, and this game commits to that fully while still letting a listener find what matters. We tested the claim by switching the monitor off and completing two sections by ear alone, which we have never managed in any other game we have passed through this desk.

Most games that put a player underwater treat the medium as a filter: apply a low-pass, add a muffled reverb, and carry on with the same positional model used on land. The result is legible and wrong, because it preserves precision that water would destroy.

Deepwater Line takes the harder path. Direction is genuinely vague at distance, sharpening only as a source approaches, and the game compensates by making the few precise sounds unmistakable. A hull creak could be anywhere. The sonar return is exactly somewhere.

The screen-off test

Our standard positional check is to identify a sound source with the screen visible and then repeat it blind. Here we went further and attempted two full sections with the monitor switched off, navigating entirely by ear.

Failing the open water crossing is not a criticism. The game intends that space to be disorienting and it succeeds, which is why we tried it third rather than first. The two successes are the finding: a game whose spatial mix carries enough information to substitute for vision in enclosed spaces.

Dialogue-to-effects gap

The narrowest figure in our table of thirty-eight games, against a median of six. Quiet conversation and loud incident sit close enough together that we never once reached for the volume control across a full playthrough.

Dynamic range without punishment

A narrow dialogue gap often means compression flattening everything, and that is not what happens here. The range between the softest passage and the loudest incident is well above average; the achievement is that the loud moments are loud in frequency content rather than simply in level.

That table is the whole trick. The breach is only seven decibels above the structural stress, but it occupies the entire spectrum where the stress occupies the bottom of it, so it feels enormously louder without actually being so. This is competent mixing rather than a technical novelty, and it is rarer than it should be.

Loudness is a frequency decision as much as a level decision, and this mix knows it.

Subtitles and captions

All four of our subtitle criteria pass, which nine of thirty-eight games manage. Size is adjustable and the default is already readable. Contrast holds against the brightest scene in the game, which we checked specifically because pale blue water is exactly where white text disappears.

Speaker labels appear consistently, and effects are captioned rather than merely described. The distinction matters: a caption reading "distant structural groan, ahead and below" carries the positional information a hearing player receives, which is the entire point and is frequently skipped.

On speakers

We ran three hours on near-field speakers to check whether the design depends on headphones. It does not. Positional accuracy narrows noticeably, as expected, but the mix remains legible and the dialogue gap holds. A player without headphones loses the blind-navigation possibility and nothing else.

What we would change

One thing only, and it is small. There is no way to audition the sound options while adjusting them, so setting the balance means leaving the menu, listening, and returning. A short looping sample behind the sliders would cost almost nothing.
